Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles-Robinson has been referred to the Privileges Committee by Deputy Speaker of the House.

Dr. Aiyna Ali made the announcement during today’s Lower House Sitting.

Dr Ali’s action was based on a complaint, by Couva South MP Barry Padarath.

Following the Opposition’s walkout on October 10th, Mr Padarath raised concern over a media release, which criticized House Speaker Jagdeo Singh, brought the House into disrepute and amounted to constructive contempt.

Dr Ali reminded of the value of the Parliament’s integrity.

Mrs Beckles-Robinson accused the Speaker of rejecting Opposition questions and showing bias in the application of House rules.

Meanwhile, the Opposition Leader has dismissed her referral to the Committee of Privileges as a distraction from the national budget debate.

She told the media after her Budget presentation in Parliament today.

The matter now goes to the Privileges Committee, which will decide whether it proceeds further.
