Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles is extending Ramadan greetings to the Muslim community of Trinidad and Tobago and believers around the world.
In her message marking the start of the holy month, she described Ramadan as a time of spiritual renewal, prayer, charity and reflection, rooted in the Five Pillars of Islam.
“Ramadhan is a rigorous time of spiritual renewal and contemplation on the message of the Divine Quran. With the sighting of the crescent moon that completes the month of Sha’baan, Muslims will embark on a journey of prayer, charity, and mindful spiritual reflection,” Mrs Beckles-Robinson stated.
“The Five Pillars of Islam are the core practices that shape Muslim identity: Shahadah (faith), Salah (prayer), Zakat (almsgiving), Sawm (fasting), and Hajj (pilgrimage). Rooted in the Quran and Sunnah, these pillars form the foundation of a life devoted to the Almighty Allah, guiding worship, conduct, and service to others,” she added.
She noted that fasting, or Sawm, calls for discipline, compassion and gratitude.
” In the Holy Qur’an, Almighty Allah underscores the principles: “O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183),” Mrs Beckles-Robinson stated.
Mrs. Beckles also remembered those facing hardship in Sudan and Palestine, expressing hope that Ramadan will inspire greater unity, justice and peace locally and globally.
“We pray for relief for the suffering, comfort for the grieving, and lasting peace in those lands and throughout the world,” she said.
“May the spirit of Ramadan inspire renewed local and global commitment to justice, compassion, and reconciliation. At a time when many confront economic and social challenges, may the lessons of Ramadan, that include patience, sacrifice, and generosity offer guidance and hope. Let us draw inspiration from its spirit to serve one another and to work collectively to a more God conscious, just, united, and compassionate society,” the Opposition Leader added.
