Nutrien Trinidad has announced a controlled shutdown of its Point Lisas operations, starting October 23rd, citing port access restrictions imposed by the National Energy Corporation.
NEC said the action relates to retroactive port service fees.
Nutrien, which exports over 140,000 tonnes of ammonia and urea monthly, also pointed to gas supply challenges impacting its financial viability.
Despite the shutdown, the company expects to meet its 2025 nitrogen sales targets, supported by strong North American operations.
The Energy Chamber has raised concerns, urging swift action to protect jobs and investment.
Former Energy Minister Stuart Young called the situation the first sign of collapse in the energy sector under the UNC Government, blaming poor leadership at NEC and NGC.
In response, Energy Minister Dr. Roodal Moonilal said talks with Nutrien are ongoing, and blamed the previous administration for failing to update port contracts.
