Nutrien says it has safely shut down its nitrogen operations in Trinidad and Tobago.
However, the company did not indicate how many employees have been affected, or whether there are plans to reassign or lay off staff during this period.
In an email to 103.1FM News today, Nutrien said it remains committed to working with stakeholders but has yet to reach a solution that would allow operations to resume under viable economic conditions.
The company cited US$28 million in retroactive port access fees and an unreliable gas supply among its main challenges.
The shutdown comes despite confirmation from NGC Chairman Gerald Ramdeen that an agreement was reached to waive the US$28 million claim and grant Nutrien unrestricted port access until year-end.
Energy Minister Dr. Roodal Moonilal has since confirmed that talks are ongoing with Nutrien and other operators to update port contracts, efforts he says the former administration failed to complete.
He added that further updates are expected in the coming days.
