A heavy seaweed accumulation is posing a challenge to hoteliers in Tobago.
Almost four feet of sea weed has covered the beaches in the eastern part of the island forcing cancellations in hotels.
Blue Waters Inn manager Reginald McLean told Tobago Updates, the hotel is already suffering from cancellations.
“When it gets to this point it is almost impossible to clear it. So what we are going to concentrate now is on is pushing it back into the sea to keep it alive so that the smell does not interfere with us too much here,” he said.
“It’s a little unfortunate. I got two couples checking in (on Tuesday) and they cancelled (Wednesday night) so they are only spending one night,” McLean added.
Tobago’s Atlantic-facing beaches have been impacted by Sargassum seaweed originating from a massive ocean belt.
The seaweed, when it rots, releases hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, which causes a foul smell and potentially can cause respiratory issues.
