Venezuela has proposed to suspend all bilateral gas agreements with Trinidad and Tobago.
Vice President Delcy Rodríguez announced earlier today that the board of state-owned Petróleos de Venezuela submitted the proposal to President Nicolás Maduro.
The agreement, signed in 2015 and automatically renewed this February for another five years, covers joint gas field development and hydrocarbon projects.
Ms Rodríguez emphasized that the agreement allows either party to terminate it, prompting Venezuela’s move to suspend all gas cooperation with Trinidad and Tobago.
The Vice President also criticized Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar for aligning with the U.S.’s “war-mongering” agenda, amid rising regional tensions.
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Penelope Beckles has expressed her concern, calling the situation “alarming and unfortunate.”
In a Facebook post this afternoon, she warned that the proposed suspension could have serious implications for the nation’s energy sector and regional relations.
She emphasized the need for transparency and leadership in navigating this critical moment.
