The Port-of-Spain Prison will be decommissioned.

This announcement came during today’s post cabinet briefing from Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander, who reminded that the current facility is over 250 years old.

He said the facility has been condemned by courts, deemed unfit for housing prisoners and has cost the state millions due to breaches of prisoners’ rights.

He added that the move has the support of stakeholders in Port-of-Spain.

According to Mr Alexander, the decommissioning will be done in four phases, starting with the removal of prisoners to the Maximum Security Prison in Arouca.
