Indian High Commissioner Pradeep Rajpurohit

Indian High Commissioner Dr Pradeep Singh Rajpurohit believes Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s second visit to the region in the span of eight months is of great importance.

Speaking with 103.1FM News, Dr Rajpurohit said this is especially beneficial for T&T, as India aims to expand trade and investments in the Caribbean.

He said discussions during Mr Modi’s visit are likely to focus on announcements from last year’s India-CARICOM Summit held in Guyana.

Key topics included strengthening economic and commercial relations in areas such as energy, agriculture, food security, health and technology.

As for his personal sentiments for Mr Modi’s visit, Dr Rajpurohit said while he planned many diplomatic events before, the excitement and encouragement from T&T makes this experience different.

Prime Minister Modi will arrive in Trinidad tomorrow afternoon for a two day state visit.

The last bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to T&T was by Atal Bihari Vajpayee in February 1999, while in November 2009, Dr Manmohan Singh led a delegation for the CHOGM Summit.
