The Ministry of Homeland Security is investigating an unpleasant experience a US visitor had with an immigration officer upon her arrival in Trinidad.
Shontince McKenzie, a hearing impaired woman, related her experience to Minister Roger Alexander and other officials of the ministry during a virtual meeting on Wednesday.
Minister Alexander issues a formal apology to Ms McKenzie on behalf of the government of Trinidad and Tobago, the Ministry and the Immigration Division.
The Ministry said a full and impartial investigation will commence and the appropriate disciplinary action will be taken if findings confirm the Immigration Officer acted unprofessionally.
Mr Alexander also instructed that enhanced training and sensitization programs be implemented for all Immigration Officers.
The training will have a special focus on customer assistance, disability awareness and effective communication with travellers requiring special assistance.
