Health Ministry issues advisory on contaminated cough syrups

The Ministry of Health has warned that three cough syrups, made in India, contain a poisonous substance linked to multiple child fatalities.

The Ministry said that the highly poisonous diethylene glycol as been reported in at least three oral liquid medicines identified in India.

The contaminated cough syrups are Coldrif, Respifresh TR, and ReLife, which are used to relive the symptoms of the common cold, flu, or cough.

Toxic effects include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, inability to pass urine, headache, altered mental state, and acute kidney injury that may lead to death.

The Ministry of Health said the contaminated products pose significant risks to patients and can cause severe and potentially life-threatening illness.

The public is advised to discontinue use of the above products, consult a physician if the drug has been used, and return the product to the point of purchase.
