Guyana’s President Dr Irfaan Ali appears to have claimed a second five-year term in office, even as official final results from Monday’s regional and general election are yet to be published.
According to reports from Reuters, Dr Ali’s People’s Progressive Party (PPP) secured at least 242,000 votes, claiming majorities in eight of the 10 districts in the South American country.
We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), a new political party founded just three months ago by businessman Azruddin Mohamed, came in second with around 109,000 votes.
It is not yet clear how many seats each party will have in the 65-member parliament.
According to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) one recount has so far been requested: it came from A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) for Sub-District 4 of District 4.
That recount will be conducted today.
