757,690 persons are eligible to cast ballots in today’s regional and general elections in Guyana.
The Guyana Elections Commission has also assured that everything is in place for the conduct of the poll.
According to the Guyana Chronicle, Chief Elections Officer Vishnu Persaud said that declarations could be made in the districts by the evening of September 3rd 2025, providing that there are no requests for a recount.
He added that he should receive the same by the morning of September 4th and this will then be submitted to the commission for a declaration.
The poll however was preceded by an incident of concern.
According to reports, gunfire was exchanged between Venezuelan and Guyanese forces in the disputed Essequibo region on Sunday.
According to a joint statement from Guyana’s armed forces and police, the incident happened around 2:30pm on the Cuyuni River.
It says a Guyanese patrol boat carrying election materials came under attack from the Venezuelan side.
The patrol returned fire and successfully manoeuvred the escort team out of danger.
The statement adds that no injuries were sustained and no election materials were damaged or compromised.
