25 mobile police units will be procured and deployed strategically around the country.

The move was revealed by Defence Minister Wayne Sturge, who told the post cabinet news conference, that they will be used to house joint operations of the TTPS and Defence Force.

Mr Sturge says the units will allow a better response to calls relating to criminal activity and also amount to a deterrent.

However, he says the first phase will see them used to take on a certain ‘particular designated terrorist entity”.

Meanwhile, Mr Sturge was asked to comment on the matter of the continued US presence in the southern Caribbean.

Speculation remains rife that the aim is political interference as opposed to drug interdiction.

Mr Sturge refused to comment on the speculation, but remains confident that the operation remains about tackling drug cartels.
