People across the Commonwealth of Nations are marking Commonwealth Day today with cultural events, school activities and faith-based services across its 56 member countries.

Observed annually on the second Monday in March since 1977, the day brings together nations representing nearly one-third of the world’s population for reflection and celebration of shared values and cooperation.

This year’s theme, “Unlocking opportunities together for a prosperous Commonwealth,” focuses on collaboration between countries and communities to improve lives through initiatives such as job creation and expanding access to quality education.

Celebrations are taking place in various forms across the Commonwealth. Cultural performances and children’s choirs are planned in Antigua and Barbuda, while several councils in the United Kingdom are hosting flag-raising ceremonies. In Tonga, schoolchildren are participating in special readings, and Malawi is hosting a health-focused event. Meanwhile, Maldives is running a social media campaign highlighting the role of women in development.

In his Commonwealth Day message, King Charles III, Head of the Commonwealth, said the observance comes during a time of both global challenges and opportunities.

“We join together on this Commonwealth Day at a time of great challenge and great possibility,” the King said, noting that issues such as conflict, climate change and rapid global transformation continue to affect many nations.

He added that cooperation among Commonwealth members can ensure the organisation remains “a force for good,” grounded in community and sustainability.

A key event on the day is the traditional multi-faith Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey. The service will be attended by King Charles, members of the Royal Family, foreign ministers, dignitaries and youth representatives from across the Commonwealth.

The event is hosted by the Royal Commonwealth Society and will feature music, dance and readings from artists representing Commonwealth nations.

In her first Commonwealth Day message, Shirley Botchwey, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, described the day as both “a celebration and a promise,” encouraging cooperation and dialogue among member states.

Commonwealth Day celebrations have expanded in recent years to include a week of activities. From March 9 to 13, London will also host the Commonwealth Investment Network Summit, where innovators from regions including the Caribbean and Pacific will present development projects to investors and policymakers.
