Fishermen and Friends of the Sea is urging the Prime Minister to assist small pig farmers affected by the recent Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome outbreak.
It suggested the $2.9 million saved from the cancellation of Independence Day celebrations be redirected to rescuing small pig farmers following the nationwide culling of pigs due to the outbreak.
The FFOS believes this will assist to revive the industry by investing in animal replacement, which can reap positive outcomes for food security and reduce the food import bill.
To strengthen the backbone of the food production sector, an organized relief effort has been set up to assist several struggling farmers restart their operations.
