Four police officers have appeared before the San Fernando Masters’ Court charged with offences relating to Misbehaviour in Public Office.
On December 31st 2025, the officers went to a location in South Trinidad where they reportedly found a firearm and ammunition secured within a storage box in a garage.
When they returned to Princes Town Police Station, they reported that nothing illegal had been found, with a corresponding entry made in the Station Diary.
Sometime after, the officers responded to another report and on their return, made a false entry in the station diary alleging that a firearm had been found at that particular location.
A report was made to the Professional Standards Bureau, with charges subsequently laid.
PC Mervyn Eligon was charged with Misbehaviour in Public Office to wit: Intent to Pervert the Course of Public Justice, and Misbehaviour in Public Office to wit: Intent to Pervert the Course of Public Justice by falsely representing that he recovered a firearm.
He was also jointly charged with PC Daawuud Mohammed, PC Alexsi Harripersad and PC Akiel Smith, with Misbehaviour in Public Office to wit: Conspiracy with Intent to Pervert the Course of Public Justice by concealing the finding of a firearm and ammunition.
All four appeared in court on Wednesday and were subsequently granted bail as follows:
- PC Mervyn Eligon – $275,000 to cover all charges
- PC Daawuud Mohammed – $150,000
- PC Alexsi Harripersad – $150,000
- PC Akiel Smith – $150,000
The matter was postponed to April 23rd, 2026.
