Transport Commissioner Clive Clarke says a major overhaul of the licensing system is coming to tackle corruption, outdated testing and unsafe testing.
Speaking before a Joint Select Committee on Wednesday, Commissioner Clarke said the reform process includes tighter monitoring of permit issuance, upgraded written exams, and the use of cameras to reduce cheating.
“The dexterity test—persons have complained about whether the officer is exercising proper discretion. We have put cameras to monitor 95%, in terms of the exam itself, whereby we can go and replay what has taken place,” he said.
He said regulating driving schools and live monitoring of diving tests are also in the works.
“I am looking forward to the aspect of where we can even track the driving test on the nation’s roads because we have had situations were persons go just a couple meters and get their driving permit. That’s a possibility based on the current system.” Commissioner Clarke said.
“More importantly, what we are working on is putting in place regulating the driving schools.”
