The World Health Organization has declared Suriname to be the first country in the Amazon region to be malaria-free.
The certification follows nearly 70 years of Government efforts to eliminate the disease across its vast rainforests and diverse communities.
The South American nation recorded its last locally acquired case 2021.
The WHO said this was achieved through the National Malaria Elimination Taskforce, Malaria Programme, Malaria Elimination Fund, and cross-border collaboration with Brazil, Guyana and French Guiana.
