The Senate has passed the Home Invasion Bill, 2025, also known as the “stand your ground” legislation, after nearly ten hours of debate on Friday night.
The Bill had no amendments after all those proposed were dismissed by the Government.
In his closing statement, Attorney General John Jeremie reiterated that the legislation is not designed to liberalise gun ownership and the Bill was not built on “controversial” foundations despite criticism from detractors.
Approved in the House of Representatives on November 28th, the Bill now awaits President Christine Kangaloo’s assent.
Once law, it will impose up to 25 years in prison or a $750,000 fine for those convicted of home invasion.
