SIR HILARY BECKLES

A powerful exploration of sport, politics, and liberation unfolded at The UWI St. Augustine during the launch of*Cricket’s First Revolutionary: Frank Worrell’s Political War Against Colonialism in the West Indies, the latest book by Professor Sir Hilary Beckles.

Chaired by Dr. Indira Rampersad and hosted under the patronage of Campus Principal Professor Rose-Marie Belle Antoine, the event featured lively reviews from Professor Selwyn Cudjoe, Dr. Roy McCree, and Dr. Rampersad herself.

Sir Hilary’s work portrays legendary cricketer Sir Frank Worrell as more than a sporting hero—depicting him as a political revolutionary who used cricket to dismantle colonial hierarchies and champion racial equality.

The evening blended scholarship and culture, featuring performances of Black Stalin’s Bun Dem and Bob Marley’s One Love.

The book is available from Metropolitan Book Suppliers Ltd and online via Ian Randle Publishers.
