An inter-ministerial committee has been appointed for the repatriation of women and children who are T&T nationals from Syria and Iraq.
The Government will collaborate with relevant stakeholders and international partners to execute the mandate, which is to expedite the process.
The committee will be chaired by Attorney General John Jeremie, and supported Ministers Saddam Hosein, Sean Sobers, Devesh Maharaj, Wayne Sturge and Roger Alexander.
In May, the US-based Human Rights Watch called on the new Government to take immediate steps to repatriate more than 90 nationals, including over 50 children, who remain detained in camps and prisons in northeast Syria and Iraq.
Former Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley established a committee in 2023, however HRW children’s rights advocacy director, Jo Becker, said no concrete action had been taken.
