President of the Trinidad and Tobago Aggregate Producers Alliance (TTAPA), Nigel Tenia, says government does not fully understand the issues facing the aggregate and quarrying industry.

Quarry operators across Trinidad shut down operations earlier this week over the government’s failure to issue quarry processing licenses.

The Alliance staged a protest at National Quarries in Sangre Grande of Thursday, saying that the company is operating without a proper processing and mining license, in violation of the law.

On Thursday, the Energy Minister denied the allegations, adding that since 2014, work has been ongoing with mining companies to issue and renew Process Mineral Licences and address licensing concerns.

Tenia says government’s response showed they need to get up to speed quickly as inaction puts up to 100,000 construction jobs at risk.
