PM KPB HOLI

Below is a message from Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on the occasion of Phagwa or Holi.

Today, Hindus across Trinidad and Tobago join millions around the world in celebrating the sacred and joyous festival of Phagwa, also known as Holi. I extend my warmest wishes for safe, peaceful, and joyful observances.

Phagwa is one of the most vibrant festivals in the Hindu calendar. Through Chowtal singing, community gatherings, and the sharing of abeer and gulal, our nation comes alive with colour, music, and fellowship. These traditions reflect a cultural inheritance preserved across generations and shared meaningfully within our national family.

At its spiritual core, Phagwa commemorates the victory of righteousness through the story of Prahlad and Holika, recorded in the Bhagavata Purana, particularly in Canto 7.

This sacred account tells of the tyrant king Hiranyakashipu, who sought to silence faith and freedom of belief. Yet tyranny did not prevail. Prahlad’s devotion endured, and injustice fell, reminding us that power without humanity cannot last and that truth ultimately outlives oppression.

Across history and in our present world, humankind continues to witness oppression give way to dignity, freedom, and justice. Phagwa, therefore, speaks not only to faith but also to the universal pursuit of human rights, equality, and respect for every individual.

Societies flourish when justice guides leadership, when human rights are protected, and when democracy gives voice and dignity to every citizen.

The colours of Phagwa symbolise renewal and reconciliation, inspiring us to release resentment, strengthen unity, and move forward together with mutual respect and shared purpose.

As we celebrate, let us give thanks for God’s blessings and remember those across the world who continue to endure hardship, conflict, tyranny, and injustice.

May this sacred festival inspire compassion, fairness, freedom, and dignity for all humanity. May Phagwa bring peace to every home, joy to every family, and renewed hope for our nation.
