Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar insists she is not afraid to make tough decisions to defend the country and its citizens.
In a statement, she took note of criticism from the Opposition Leader, who today pointed to comments made in 2024 regarding the PNM’s State of Emergency.
Mrs Persad-Bissessar says she stands firmly by those words, which claim the 2024 SoE was a political gimmick designed to create the appearance of action, instead of deliver results.
The PM insists the two SoEs declared under her Government are not band-aids, but were instead triggered by “credible intelligence of threats”.
Additionally, she doubled down on her criticism of the Opposition for their refusal to support the Zones of Special Operations Bill, accusing them of “fierce resistance”.
There were also words of thanks for the United States and its recent assistance: “I also thank the United States for its continued partnership in combating this scourge of crime. Trinidad and Tobago now has a invite at the table where international and regional security is being addressed. I will continue to seek further cooperation and assistance to ensure that gangs and organised criminal networks are eradicated from our country.”
