National Gas Company chairman Gerald Ramdeen said Nutrien, the world’s top potash producer, has been granted permission to use the ports at Point Lisas until the end of the year.

The Trinidad Express reported that the approval followed a meeting between NGC officials and Nutrien.

In response, Nutrien has withdrawn an injunction it had filed in the High Court.

Nutrien on Tuesday said it would start a controlled shutdown of its operations over a dispute with the National Energy Corporation over $190 million in retroactive port fees.

The development may stave off Nutrien’s announcement, which was planned for Thursday.

The company said the shutdown was “in response to port access restrictions imposed by Trinidad and Tobago’s National Energy Corporation (NEC) and a lack of reliable and economic natural gas supply that has reduced the free cash flow contribution of the Trinidad Nitrogen operations over an extended period of time.”

Nutrien, which employs 600 full-time workers in Trinidad, said it would continue to engage with stakeholders and assess options with respect to its operations in Trinidad.
