Niger has opened an investigation into whether a rare Mars meteorite was smuggled out of the country, before it sold for $5.3 million at a New York auction.
Officials have said it likely bears all the hallmarks of illicit international trafficking, questioning how the 50-pound rock even left the country.
Luxury auction house Sotheby’s has strongly rejected the allegation adding it complied with all international regulations.
