World Athletics has mandated DNA testing for athletes who want to qualify for female category eligibility.

Reuters reports athletes will be only be eligible to compete in the female category for world ranking competitions such as the World Championships if they clear a one-time gene test.

The new testing protocol will require athletes to prove biological sex through the once-in-a-lifetime test for the SRY gene, which can be conducted via a cheek swab or blood test.

It will take effect at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, which is set for 13 September.
