Rough Seas

Rough sea conditions are being experienced along northern and eastern exposed coastal areas, with wave heights reaching near 3 metres.

According to the TTMS, conditions are being driven by relatively strong winds which are agitating the sea surface and generating large waves and potentially dangerous sea conditions.

There is an increased risk of strong rip currents, posing a serious hazard to swimmers and beachgoers, while agitated seas are likely to be perilous for offshore activities, including fishing.

A Hazardous Seas Alert remains in effect until midday on Thursday.

A High Winds Alert is also in effect at this time, and will remain in place until midday tomorrow.

The Met Service says there is a high potential for gusts exceeding 55 km/h.

These may be brief but strong enough to displace unsecured roofs, loose outdoor items and can even topple trees or weak structures.
