The Ministry of Labour is reminding parents and employers that child labour remains illegal in Trinidad and Tobago.
Under the Children’s Act, no child under 16 is allowed to work, except in family-run businesses and even then, only under strict conditions.
Violators can face face penalties from $5,000 for parents and up to $25,000 and three years in prison for employers.
The Ministry warned that child labour could harm children’s physical and mental health, and urged citizens to protect the rights and well-being of the nation’s children.
According to UNICEF, child labour still affects nearly 138 million children worldwide.
