TTCGA Tree Planting 2

The Trinidad and Tobago Commonwealth Games Association (TTCGA) marked Commonwealth Day by planting a tree to symbolically promote environmental sustainability and collective responsibility among the Commonwealth of Nations.

The tree planting ceremony took place on Monday on the TTCGA compound in Belmont, in celebration of Commonwealth Day which is observed on the second Monday in May.

Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) head Diane Henderson emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges.

“The Commonwealth reminds us that we are part of a wider family, connected across nations and cultures.  This year’s theme, “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” speaks to the power of unity”. When we join hands—whether in planting a tree, supporting a neighbour, or building new ideas—we open doors to a brighter future and the generations to come,” she said.

“Today’s initiative reflects the spirit of the Commonwealth—unity, collaboration, and shared responsibility.  By  planting  these  trees,  we  are  not  only  contributing  to  environmental sustainability but also leaving a legacy for future generations,” Henderson stated.

Councillor for Belmont, Malouia Broune, welcomed the initiative and highlighted the role of local engagement in protecting the environment.

Belmont-born Brian Lewis, the immediate Past President of the TTCGA and the Secretary General of the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) underscored the importance of youth involvement and environmental leadership throughout the Commonwealth.

The 2026 Commonwealth Day Tree Planting Initiative highlighted the theme “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” emphasizing unity and collaboration among Commonwealth nations.
