Chief Secretary Farley Augustine says his administration is strengthening support for Tobagonians “from birth to burial,” as the island confronts a worrying population decline.

Speaking at a community gathering, Augustine highlighted expanded financial assistance for grieving families, noting that the standard NIS funeral grant often falls short.

He said the Division of Health, Wellness and Social Protection has been stepping in to help those in genuine need, even when they fall outside existing policy.

Augustine also raised alarm over Tobago’s falling birth rate—now just over 400 births a year, down from nearly 1,000.

In response, the THA has launched a new “Baby Box” initiative, providing every newborn with essential supplies to support parents and encourage healthier family growth.
