The Chamber of Industry and Commerce says it recognizes the recent SoE declaration as a “necessary measure” to restore the safety and security of citizens and businesses.
In a statement, it says it understands the Government’s decision to implement the SoE, but believes that this cannot be a standalone solution to the crime problem.
As such, it is calling for this to be supported by comprehensive and sustainable strategies to eliminate the root causes of criminal activities.
It is also calling on the authorities to continue to strengthening security protocols within correctional facilities, enforcing accountability to prevent internal collusion, and implementing long-term crime reduction initiatives built on intelligence, technology, and effective inter-agency collaboration.
With regard to the recent failed Zones of Special Operations Bill, the Chamber is urging Government to address the concerns raised relating to the legislation, and to engage in a more collaborative approach in its legislative agenda.
