Call for Government to strengthen laws and support for women facing abuse

Political Leader of The Patriotic Front, Mickela Panday says the Government must take stronger action to protect women from violence.

In a statement, she expressed condolences to the family of Angela Lutchman, who was killed yesterday, in an alleged murder –suicide.

Ms Panday called on the Government to strengthen laws, ensure police take abuse reports seriously, provide more safe houses, and also stressed the need for programs that teach healthy relationships and help women rebuild their lives.

She highlighted the issue of coercive control, where many women live in fear before physical violence starts, and criticized victim-blaming, urging accountability for the perpetrators.

Ms. Panday acknowledged violence against and noted that while all victims deserve protection but added that using men’s experiences to downplay the violence women face is harmful.

She emphasized that we can acknowledge all victims without ignoring the gendered nature of the crisis.
