Founder of the Adult Literacy Tutors Association, ALTA – TT, Paula Lucie-Smith is calling shame on those who use literacy struggles to insult others.
In a social media post today, she referred to remarks made in Parliament last Friday, in which ALTA was used as an insult and later amplified on social media using misleading memes and ALTA’s logo.
Ms Lucie-Smith said such comments undermine current and prospective students and reinforce harmful stigma around reading difficulties.
She stressed that struggling to read does not reflect intelligence, and highlighted research showing that nearly half the population requires explicit instruction to learn to read, a service ALTA has provided for over 50 years.
