In Kathmandu, Nepal, police have opened fire on youth-led protests against a government ban on social media, killing at least 17 and injuring 145.
Dubbed “Gen Z demonstrations,” students stormed parliament and clashed with riot police, following frustration with government’s lack of action to tackle corruption and boost economic opportunities.
The ban currently affects 26 platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, and YouTube.
The government said it has been implemented due to growing concern about issues such as misinformation, data privacy, online harm and national security.
