Opposition MP Stuart Young claims the government is fabricating accomplishments and taking credit for past work done by the PNM.

In a Facebook post, Mr Young said the Kamla Persad-Bissessar government is misleading the public about its performance in the energy sector and leaving the country worse off.

The former Prime Minister claims the government has failed to achieve anything new in the energy sector, apart from the shutdown of Nutrien and the loss of competitiveness in the manufacturing sector.

“They are now claiming to have broken ground by pursuing collaboration with Guyana and Suriname. This is completely false. It was the PNM administration that signed agreements with both the governments of Guyana and Suriname to collaborate in the energy sector and had on-going discussions,” Young stated.

“We also signed agreements and had ongoing collaborative arrangements with Staatsolie the State owned national oil company in Suriname and we were pursuing investments in Guyana in solar, gas and the extractive sector,” he added.

With respect to cross-border gas from Venezuela, Mr Young said the government is not involved in direct negotiation with the government of Venezuela, adding this will not benefit Trinidad and Tobago.

“It was the PNM administration that managed to achieve the 30 year Exploration and Production Licence for the Dragon Gas field, the 20 year Exploration and Production Licence for Cocuina and the OFAC Licenses in the name of the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (very different to Shell PLC and BP PLC as has now happened),” Young stated.

He chided the government for what he said is attempting to “mislead” the public.

“Unfortunately we have a government that continues to try and mislead the population by fabricating information and trying to pass themselves off as achieving what has already been done,” Young said.
