The UWI St. Augustine Campus says the approved tuition fee increase of 20% will not take effect during the upcoming academic year.
The decision to increase fees at the St. Augustine Campus was made by the University Council, the highest authority of The UWI, on May 2nd 2025.
According to the University, this decision was made after 24 years without a fee increase, with the attendant financial hardship to the campus.
Initially, a 25% increase was recommended, following extensive consultation and research by a special Fee Committee comprising Guild-appointed representatives, actuaries and business professionals.
This was subsequently reduced to 20% after further representation from the Guild of Students.
The Campus also agreed to a request from the Guild to mitigate the consequences of the fee increase for current students: it agreed not put a financial hold if students paid 80% of their fees, thereby enabling them to register and allowing more time to pay the 20% increase.
