The Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association (TTUTA) staged a symbolic “blackout” on Tuesday, donning all black with red ribbons outside the Ministry of Finance.
The union is pressing for long-delayed salary increases and back pay promised since the end of 2025.
TTUTA President Crystal Ashe said the union had sent letters to Finance Minister Davendranath Tancoo on Monday and Tuesday seeking clarity on payment timelines—but so far, no response.
“We delivered yet another hard copy letter indicating that we would like some clarity with respect to timelines and dates in terms of the payments of the new salaries and the back pay for our membership,” Asche told
“They promised that in January. January has come and January has gone. February has come, February has gone and we would like these persons to receive what would have been promised to them, our Third Schedule members.”
