Trinidad and Tobago has been named as part of a coalition to collaborate in US-led actions against drug trafficking in the region.
US State Secretary Marco Rubio made the announcement yesterday while speaking about a broader strategy against international narcotics smuggling.
Mr Rubio said the criminal organization, Cartel de los Soles, has been identified by Washington as allegedly being part President Nicolás Maduro’s regime in Venezuela.
A fleet of US warships was deployed to the southern Caribbean last week, aimed at infiltrating and dismantling the narcotics ring in this region.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has pledged support for the move, adding that US Forces will be granted access to Trinidadian territory to defend the people of Guyana.
