Trinidad and Tobago has acceded to the Escazú Agreement, drawing congratulations from the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI).
The Agreement is a legally binding treaty for Latin America and the Caribbean focused on environmental democracy.
CANARI issued warmly congratulates the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago on its decision to become a Party to the Escazú Agreement.
It described the Agreement as a “landmark regional treaty that promotes access to environmental information, public participation in environmental decision-making, access to justice in environmental matters, and the protection of environmental human rights defenders.”
CANARI says the move strongly demonstrates Trinidad and Tobago’s “commitment to transparency, inclusive governance, and environmental democracy.”
The Institute said the Escazú Agreement provides a robust framework to strengthen environmental governance while empowering citizens and communities to play an active role in decisions that affect their environment, livelihoods, and well-being.
