Tobago is exploring the possibility of acquiring US-style security radar systems, amid concerns about the country’s ability to respond to maritime threats.
Chief Secretary Farley Augustine says he recently met with the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires to discuss access to similar assets for Trinidad and Tobago.
Mr. Augustine says the request was not made on Tobago’s behalf alone, but in the interest of national security.
He also reiterates the need for investment to improve response capabilities, noting that the country’s current capacity to handle certain maritime incidents is “woefully inadequate.”
Mr. Augustine also confirms that most of the U.S. radar assets previously deployed in Tobago have already been removed.
