With the island facing increasingly dry conditions, the Government of St. Lucia is calling on residents to conserve water and adopt safe water harvesting practices to protect public health.

The Environmental Health Division, operating under the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Nutrition, highlighted the importance of keeping roof gutters and downpipes clean and free of debris, bird droppings, and other contaminants.

Residents are also encouraged to use a first-flush system to reduce bacteria and other pollutants in collected rainwater.

Water storage containers, including drums, tanks, and buckets, should be properly covered or fitted with tight-fitting lids or screens to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes and rats, officials advised.

“These measures are essential to ensure the safety of our water supply and the health of the population,” said a spokesperson for the Environmental Health Division.

The Ministry urges all households and businesses to take these precautions seriously as the island continues to navigate the current dry spell.
