London University has bestowed one of its highest honours on Caribbean academic leader Professor Sir Hilary Beckles.
During its Foundation Day ceremony marking 189 years, the University of London awarded Sir Hilary an Honorary Doctor of Social Sciences at Senate House, under the patronage of Chancellor Princess Anne.
Orator Professor Kingsley Abbott praised Sir Hilary’s groundbreaking scholarship, leadership in higher education, and global advocacy for social justice—charting his journey from Windrush roots to earning a PhD at 24 and becoming the youngest professor at The UWI.
Now Vice-Chancellor of The UWI and Chancellor of the United Nations University, Sir Hilary said the honour also celebrates UWI’s historic ties to London University, where he completed his first major research work nearly four decades ago.
