Opposition Senator Sanjiv K. Boodhu has expressed strong concerns over a Cabinet-appointed committee tasked with reviewing municipal electoral district boundaries.

Senator Boodhu reminded the public that Sections 71 and 72 of the Constitution, together with Section 4 of the Elections and Boundaries Commission Act, clearly give the Elections and Boundaries Commission, or EBC, the sole authority to review both Parliamentary and municipal electoral boundaries.

He emphasized that the EBC’s functions cannot be directed or overridden by any other body.

Criticizing the move as political overreach, Boodhu warned that the committee could undermine the integrity of upcoming Local Government Elections.

He questioned the committee’s purpose, who it will advise, and how its findings might be used, calling on the government to respect the constitutional role of the EBC.

Senator Boodhu’s statement adds to growing debate about the potential politicization of electoral boundaries in Trinidad and Tobago.
