Debate on the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Amendment Bill has commenced in the Senate.

During the last hour, Independent Senator Dr Desiree Murray and Government Senator Brian Baig have thrown their support behind the Bill.

Dr Murray recommended that three-day window to remedy defects should be extended to 21 days for minor defects and 42 business days for major defects.

Senator Baig said the legislation is about protecting lives, and taking a tough stance on reckless and lawless driving.

Meanwhile, Opposition Senator Janelle John-Bates says the Bill is reactionary and not solution-oriented.

She argued that legislation was rushed due to public pressure, social media protests, and newspaper criticism, and was not thoughtful policy planning.
