Land and Legal Affairs Minister Saddam Hosein has accused the Opposition of playing politics with national security, saying the decision to call a State of Emergency was not taken lightly.
According to the Minister, the move was based on the urgent need to protect citizens and members of the security services from credible threats.
Also, regarding concerns from the Opposition regarding certain provisions in the SoE, he claims they are identical to those included in the SoE called by the PNM in 2024.
One of the provisions criticized by the Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles at a media briefing yesterday stated “No person shall (a) endeavour, whether orally or otherwise, to influence public opinion in a manner likely to be prejudicial to public safety; or (b) do any act or to have any article in his possession with a view to making or facilitating the making of any such endeavour.”
Meanwhile, the Emergency Powers Regulations 2024 states “No person shall – (a) endeavour, whether orally or otherwise, to influence public opinion in a manner likely to be prejudicial to public safety and order; or (b) do any act or have any article in his possession with a view to making or facilitating the making of any such endeavour.”
Mr Hosein has since reaffirmed his support for the Prime Minister and this latest decision, insisting the Government will not be deterred by “the noise of the Opposition”.
