The left-hander looked like he was batting on a different pitch, blasting 27 boundaries in a commanding 279-run third-wicket stand with captain Tom Latham.
Latham, who struck a long-awaited 145 — his first century in 40 innings — anchored the innings with grit and patience.
By stumps on day three, New Zealand had powered to 417 for 4, leading by a massive 481 after a first-innings advantage of 64. A declaration is expected either overnight or early on day four.
