Prosecutors said greed, arrogance and power were the driving forces behind four men charged in the US for the 2021 assassination of Haiti’s last elected president, Jovenel Moise.
Federal prosecutors and defence attorneys began presenting opening statement in the trial in Miami.
The men are charged with conspiring in South Florida to kidnap or kill Haiti’s former leader.
Assistant US Attorney Sean McLaughlin told the jury the case against the four men was not complicated, as they wanted to seize power and get rich.
Moise’s assassination led to unprecedented turmoil in Haiti, with gang leaders growing increasingly violent and empowered.
