President Dr. Irfaan Ali has announced plans to create plazas along the East Coast and East Bank of Demerara to support organised vending and reduce illegal roadside stalls.
Speaking at the opening of Demerara Bank’s Beterverwagting branch, he stressed the need for a “more orderly system of growth and development” and safe, enjoyable spaces for vendors and shoppers.
The Ministry of Public Works has already begun clearing trucks, caravans, and stalls obstructing traffic and pedestrian pathways, with notices issued to affected vendors.
Dr. Ali said the plazas, to be supported by the Guyana Development Bank and commercial banks, will include food courts and essential amenities, though no exact timeline for construction has yet been provided.
