The Port of Port of Spain says measures are being taken to minimize the impact of certain “pressures” on its operations.
This assurance comes as it responds to concerns from the Downtown Owners and Merchants Association that vessels are waiting up to two weeks beyond their scheduled docking dates.
PPOS says ports in the region have been encountering difficulties in recent months due to a rise in cargo volumes, global shipping interruptions, and delays in documentation.
It adds that this situation has impacted Port operations, resulting in inconsistent and
unplanned vessel arrivals, and by extension, the efficiency of cargo delivery.
Among the measures it says are being taken to manage vessel flow are:
- Coordinating closely with shipping lines to increase the reliability of vessel arrivals.
- Implementing operational adjustments to improve yard capacity and berth productivity.
- Working with all agencies to streamline document processing and clearance
Regarding docking periods, it claims average wait times for vessels between April and July ranged from 1.4 days to 4.2 days.
